Thank you for visiting my blog, Andrea, & also for your kind comments about my work! I took a "trip" to your blog & really enjoyed seeing your loom set up & your work... happy weaving!

andrea milde

Hello Lyn, I've find you and your condor flying through the cyberspace just up to the North of Spain. Congratulations. Since I am living in this area _ six years ago I arrived_ one of the things I will never miss is a sky crossed over by a vulture (we dont have condors and the vultures are the biggest birds flying here. So you just caught a wonderfull instant for your tapestry and it is agreat work you have done!!! Andrea

lyn

See you soon, little sister! Safe journeys!

susie

Stunning! Can't wait to see her in person!

lyn

Tommye,Ixchel, Michael, Debra, & Janet... thank you for your wonderful comments & for keeping me company during this long journey. Two years seems like such a long time, yet it seems to have slipped by so quickly!

Kathy, it's so wonderful to meet another North Rim artist! After visiting your blogs I can see you are an "old hand" at park residencies & I have been enjoying reading your journals. I know you will absolutely love the North Rim! Not sure that they will be ready in July for the tapestry, but as soon as I am given a delivery date I will announce it here.

Janet Austin

Wow, this is so impressive! And beautiful. I love to think of her soaring above the North Rim.

Debra DuBois

Absolutely Incredibly Beautiful! What an exquisite job Lyn! I can't wait until I can go and see her!

Michael F. Rohde

Lyn, she is superb! And a great excuse to make a trip to the North Rim Lodge.

ixchel suarez

WOW my Dearest Lyn. It is magnificent! can already see him fly away from your loom..! congratulations from my heart!

tommye

BEAUTIFULLLLL! Congratulations on the birth of this glorious tapestry!

Kathy Hodge

Your tapestry is so impressive, I hope it is installed by mid July so I can see it when I am Artist In Residence on the North Rim this year. I look forward to reading more of your blog as well! Congratulations!

lyn

And more thanks to all!

When one first learns about condors & is told "these birds have on average a 9.5 foot wingspan", you think "wow". When one actually sees what a 9.5 wingspan looks like, you say "WOW"! For an even better look at these beautiful birds, visit this website-- http://www.peregrinefund.org/project-galleries/california-condor --there are photos of biologists working with condors & videos of condors in flight.

I have only explored the possibility of exhibiting the tapestry at Tohono Chul Park's museum, but they felt they did not have the necessary vertical wall space & talked about draping part of the tapestry on the floor, something I am definitely not willing to do. In thinking on it, I have decided against pursuing any other venues, because if something were to happen to the tapestry, it would be devastating. So, anyone wanting to see her displayed in all of her glory will have to journey to the North Rim, which in my mind isn't too much of a hardship! If you happen to live in Tucson & would like to see her before she is rolled for storage, I will be having an open studio to celebrate her release once I have the back finished, probably in a few weeks. Contact me if you are interested in receiving an invite.

I have hopes that the North Rim will put together some sort of event to celebrate the long awaited remodel of the Visitor Center. It will create a wonderful setting for this tapestry, but just as importantly other artists who had residencies at the North Rim will also be able to see their work, which has been in storage due to lack of wall space, displayed. Be sure I will announce any event as soon as I can!

Michelle Haas

Phenomenal Lyn! It's so exciting to see it done. I can't wait to see it on display at the north rim.

Mary Kay

Thanks again for sharing this awesome process. I'm looking forward to learning about the finishing steps too. Is there any chance that she'll be displayed here in Tucson "in person" before she takes off for the canyon?

Kathy Spoering

She's huge! Is this how big a condor is? She's also a beauty. Congratulations!

Debbie Herd

Wow!!!! Congratulations Lyn!

Merna

Fabulous, Lyn!!! You really captured the eagle soaring against the canyon backdrop. I can hardly wait to make another trip to the North Rim after it is installed.

lyn

Thank you, everyone! It is still quite hard to believe that the weaving is complete.

After resting for 24 hours to let the weaving relax, I will begin finishing the back. Then she will have several appointments for appraisal, photography, & storage preparation. She'll be headed to the Grand Canyon North Rim in late summer or early fall of this year to go on permanent display in their Visitor Center.

I am also resting! More blog posts & photos of the cutting off, the finishing process & the activities I listed above will be coming soon...

Annie Kerr

!!WOOOOOOOOH!! I am SO impressed. I'm sure my heart is beating faster. Can you tell me where she's heading next?

Karen

CONGRATULATIONS, Lyn!!!

  • I am a tapestry artist & naturalist living in the beautiful Sonoran Desert, an environment of constant inspiration. Within these pages you will find not only a portfolio of my works but also many tales, thoughts, and musings about my journeys in tapestry weaving & life; the two are as closely linked as warp & weft and so should not be separated.

  • Grand Journey
I was the September 2010 Artist-in-Residence at Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim. This is a chronological portfolio of the creation of Grand Journey, a tapestry depicting a life size California Condor in flight over Grand Canyon that the Park requested me to weave. The finished tapestry is approximately 6 feet wide by 10 feet in height. Creation of this piece began in December 2010 and was completed in February 2013. She will go on permanent display at the North Rim's Visitor Center in late summer of 2013. I have the distinct pleasure and honor of being the first contemporary tapestry weaver to be awarded a National Park Artist Residency, and also the first to have my work included in a National Park's permanent art collection!
