mixed fibers
26” x 24.75”
This tapestry began as an experiment in non-objective weaving focused on color gradations & physical/visual fiber textures inspired by the work of Irish painter David Quinn & the mark making I was doing in my mixed media collages. The first time I came across Quinn’s work I was mesmerized; I felt that many of his paintings resemble textiles. I also wanted to use some yarns that I had indigo dyed & just began weaving on a leftover warp without thinking about it too much or taking notes. During the weaving, I realized that the colors reminded me of beach glass. I also realized that I have seen "desert glass" on my desert walks. It takes a lot longer in this dry environment to get tumbled & etched like beach glass does in the oceans, but things here still weather in the way of the desert. Chance encounters with wind, sand & an occasional ephemeral flow of water do the work over time.
