This small tapestry was a "study" begun while I was the artist-in-residence at Zion National Park September 2014. After a few rounds of simple photography with my small digital camera & cell phone along the unnamed riverside path that parallels the Virgin River just steps away from Grotto House where I was living, I surprised myself by developing a design that is in some ways quite unlike my previous work. I designed the image to the left using two of my photographs to create a transparent collage of the canyon’s cliffs superimposed over a view looking straight down onto the river and its bank marked with tracks of turkeys, birds, and insects. Although I don't usually weave samples, it is a great method for discovering whether a complex design is weavable & whether I want to weave it! This tapestry also served as my demo weaving during my public programs while I was in residence. The large tapestry that this small study was later woven after I returned home, canyon tide, is now part of Zion National Park's permanent collection.
